We had an incredible turnout for this year’s Day of Service, with over 30 volunteers of staff, family, and friends joining us at Hyland Creek Park to celebrate Wild Salmon Day. We teamed up with the City of Surrey’s SHaRP program spending the day making a hands-on impact through environmental restoration and learning.

Our team of volunteers were split into three crews and this is what we accomplished:

  • Playground Crew: This team weeded the area and installed a fresh layer of specialized playground mulch, giving the space a clean and safe refresh for families to enjoy.
  • Pathway Crew: Tackled a dense wall of overgrown bramble, clearing over three feet of invasive growth along one of the park’s trails. We followed up by installing mulch to define and restore the pathway’s bed edge.
  • Creekside Crew: Focused on habitat restoration, this team cleared bramble near the bridge leading to the creek and planted native species like salmonberry which is a valuable food source for salmon, birds, and pollinators alike.

The weather was on our side with a beautiful sunny day, and spirits were high as our volunteers worked hard to give back to the community and environment.

Nearby, the SHaRP team had educational displays set up, allowing everyone to take a break and learn about the tadpoles, aquatic insects, and salmon living in the creek. It was the perfect blend of physical effort and environmental education, a truly rewarding day for everyone involved!

This annual tradition of giving back through our volunteer Day of Service has been going strong since 2011. Check out some of our past projects here!
