A Terraced Yard Design
A well-planned terraced yard design can transform even the most challenging outdoor space into a beautiful and functional landscape. In this recent project, our Landscape Services team revitalized a once-underused backyard into a more functional space featuring a custom terraced retaining wall, vibrant plantings, and a beautifully crafted circular paver seating area.
The Vision: A Usable Yard Space
The family wanted a level, more usable lawn for sports and casual games of badminton. However, the original backyard was heavily sloped and experienced drainage issues in the lower areas. While addressing those concerns, we introduced the idea of a terraced design to help create more defined spaces in the yard. Once they saw the drawings, the clients fell in love with the terraced retaining wall concept.
The Build
Our team regraded and sodded the lower lawn to create a flat area for recreation. A valley stone retaining wall was installed to support the upper level. This elevated terrace features a basalt stepping stone path that winds through planted beds and leads to a circular paver seating area, offering a quiet space for relaxation.
To complement the hardscape, we installed a variety of hardy, low-maintenance plantings. These included Hibiscus syriacus, Calamagrostis, Perovskia atriplicifolia, and creeping thyme, which add colour throughout the landscape.
A Complete Transformation
What began as a simple request for a usable lawn became a complete backyard transformation. The result is a customized, multi-level outdoor space that balances beauty, comfort, and function. This terraced yard is now an ideal setting for family life and outdoor enjoyment.
