Some seasonal horticulture facts:

Contrary to myth, Poinsettias are not poisonous. They are a member of the Euphorbia family, and their sap can cause irritation. If ingested in large quantities they can cause irritation and nausea. However, according to the POISINDEX information source – the primary resource used by the majority of poison control centers nationwide – a child who weighed 50 lbs. would have to eat over 500 poinsettia leaves to reach an even potentially toxic dose of compounds in the poinsettia plant.

Christmas trees are a beautiful part of the holiday. Cut Christmas trees can pose a fire hazard if allowed to dry out. Christmas tree fires are responsible for more than 200 fires, 6 deaths, and over 8 million in property damage each year in North America. Ensure that your tree stand has an adequate reservoir for water, and keep it topped up daily. Only use lights that are low wattage, and are approved for indoor use. Never have candles or other ignition sources close by trees.
