With summer just around the corner, it’s time to start preparing your irrigation system. Remember, irrigation systems should not be viewed as “set and forget” systems. Proper and timely maintenance can reduce water consumption, save money with less plant loss, and help to maintain a healthy and beautiful landscape. Our IIABC certified professionals are fully equipped to provide full service from spring start up to fall shut down including assessments and repairs.

In the spring we open up valves, set controller programs, as well as complete a system review ensuring that all components are functioning properly. Our inspection checklist will ensure a thorough evaluation will be performed. This will ensure proper operation of your irrigation system to keep your landscape healthy. You will receive a comprehensive report of your system’s performance, and recommended repairs and improvements.  Click here for more information on irrigation system management.

Did you know?

More than 50% of the water applied to lawns and gardens is lost due to evaporation, or run-off because of overwatering. To reduce loses due to evaporation, system timers should be set to water early in the morning. Run times should be adjusted for soil conditions, exposure and grade, to avoid losses from run-off.

Safety is always a priority at Para Space. Every year our respirators are fit tested for all staff who have one. This includes replacing all filter parts of the respirator and training on proper use and storage. Fit testing is conducted in an enclosed tent. Each staff member puts on their respirator making sure to do a proper seal test. When the seal test is complete, they enter the enclosure where a non-toxic, irritant smoke is released across the bottom of the respirator for one minute. If at any time they can taste or smell anything getting by the respirator, it will be closely examined and fixed. The intent is for all staff to pass the fit test to ensure their safety during any chemical inhalation exposure.

This winter the temperature in Metro Vancouver dropped to a frigid -10 degrees Celsius. As a result, some of the plant material in your landscape may have been damaged. Plants are rated by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) to tolerate certain temperatures; this is the authority that is mentioned on every plant label that comes from a nursery. Vancouver is classed as a Zone 8a to 8b climate. Some plants, although rated as being suitable for our region, are proving to be unreliable with colder than average winters such as this year’s, thus causing widespread damage to plants. California lilac (Ceanothus), creeping raspberry (Rubus calycinoides), heavenly bamboo (Nandina), and Escallonia are just a few of the plants that are showing signs of winter stress like severe defoliation or complete failure. Furthermore, soil saturation, microclimate and variety also play a role in the plant’s heartiness. Para Space will be able to assess the extent of this damage in spring and new suggestions for replacements will be reported to council.

The snowfall has caused other damage because some plants could not sustain the heavy weight of the snow and freezing ice for such a long period of time. Tree limb loss and hedge splaying are clear evidence of the damage caused by the heavy snowfall this winter. Magnolia varieties, Liquidamber, and Cercis canadensis are some of a few trees that became particularly weak once the snowpack was sitting on them, resulting in broken limbs. In most cases we are able to clean up the wound on the tree with corrective cuts. However, in some cases there are trees that had the leader limb break under the weight, in which case removal and replacement may be necessary as the long term health and structural stability of the tree would be severely compromised. Cedar hedges are very susceptible to splaying when poorly pruned. Cedars that are pruned to make the top portion the widest part of the hedge will begin to fall over and split when the snowfall became too great. Para Space prunes hedges in a pyramidal shape which has two benefits for cedars. First, the shape being tapered at the top creates a smaller surface area for snow to accumulate on, therefore better protecting it from splaying under the weight. Second, pruning in this method allows more daylight to reach the base of the hedge, therefore promoting healthy foliage growth which in turn looks more aesthetically pleasing.

Proper pruning techniques will enhance the look of almost any landscape, while improper pruning can ruin or greatly reduce a plant’s potential in the landscape. In many cases, healthy trees and shrubs that have been pruned incorrectly are often weakened by pest and disease or become deformed by poor pruning methods. Proper pruning involves removing parts of the plant to improve its overall health, effect in the landscape, and ultimately its value. The use of proper pruning techniques is an essential landscape maintenance practice for trees and shrubs. At Para Space, we have our own ISA approved Arborists who provide On the Job training and host a variety of workshops to our staff to ensure the best care is provided to your trees and shrubs throughout your property.

We recently volunteered our time to give a tour of our office and worksites to a small group of Syrian refugees. The purpose of this event was to show off Canadian workplaces, showcasing potential employment opportunities, providing them with job hunting skills and giving them hope as they adjust to life in their new country. The day was organized through MOSAIC, a registered charity serving immigrant, newcomer and refugee communities in Metro Vancouver.

The 2016 Para Space Day of Service was an opportunity for staff to unite and demonstrate environmental stewardship and humanitarianism by giving back to our community. This year we partnered with Vancouver General Hospital to enhance the landscape in their therapy garden for patients. The rain stayed away for the few hours it took to clean up the area and turn it back into a tranquil garden. It was a fun and rewarding day for all who volunteered.

Deciduous trees are susceptible to numerous pests and diseases. For example, aphids damage leaves and transmit viruses; caterpillar larvae and mites over winter and cause problems during the growing season; black spot and powdery mildew are damaging fungal diseases; and both moss and algae can harm trees. During the winter months we use special product applications to prevent such problems. However, the product stinks literally like rotten eggs! Though the smell doesn’t last long, the benefits of the treatment does and it is the BEST protection against insect infestations on deciduous trees. The treatments are completely safe and the Pest Management Regulatory Agency, a branch of Health Canada, has approved Lime Sulphur for use throughout Canada. As well, the BC Government approves its use under the Integrated Pest Management Regulation and ALL Metro Vancouver municipalities permit its use. If you would like more information on our Plant Health Care Programs, contact our office today.

In the summer chlorophyll gives leaves their green colour and is so dominant it hides the other colours in the leaves. But in the fall, chlorophyll in the leaves breaks down allowing the other colours to finally shine through and show their beautiful reds, yellows, and oranges. So with fall at our doorstep we look toward putting our gardens to rest for the winter months but before the dormant season is in full swing we have a new array of colours to admire amongst the plant material.

This is also the time to treat trees from an accumulation of moss and algae which can diminish overwintering insect populations from infesting the trees and can further reduce the need for pesticide applications during the growing season. We use a safe and low toxicity treatment to maintain the optimal health of deciduous trees. Contact our office for more information.

The following are trees with great fall colour.

Seasonal annuals provide highlights or splashes of brightness in focal point areas throughout the winter months. Nothing can compete with the colour you get from annual flowers especially after all the fall leaves have dropped. Winter annuals are generally planted in October after the last threat of frost has passed. Para Space designs planting schemes to suit your property’s specific needs. Our selection of plants ensures displays withstand sunny and shady areas. Though annuals are seasonal, nothing competes with their aesthetic impact making them well worth the investment for your landscape.

20 members of staff representing all 4 of our divisions attended the CanWest – Western Canada’s Premier Horticulture Expo held at Tradex in Abbotsford in September. This was a great opportunity to see outdoor equipment demos, visit trade show booths and open house tours at nearby nurseries. We attended seminars and hands-on workshops from Treatment for Invasive Species to Building Stone Fire Pits.

The theme of the show was “island” and there were some great booth interpretations of the theme. Amber Mottle entered into the container on our behalf. She made an incredible underwater display using a variety of sedum, grasses, and even air plants.

Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable two days with lots of great information to take away and implement into our program.
